Having To Deal With Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a big word, a mouth full, really. Most people are aware of it and aware that it has to do with problems doing math. But this syndrome encases so much more than simple math inefficiencies. Dyslexia is so common that everybody knows what it is, and reading and writing problems seem to get all of the attention. When thinking about dysgraphia, people usually don’t think of it as a learning disability. Writing is just difficult for my child. Or, my child has poor handwriting, but so do doctors. Yet, dysgraphia is real and the sooner that we consider it a learning problem and deal with it as such, the sooner we can deal with it in a positive manner. Although it is indeed difficult to overcome a math problem, there are many remedies that can be used to help students succeed. Before getting to any specific math instruction, however, you should work at overcoming any math anxiety the student may have. This is a real problem.
